Research Funding

Our researchers attracted more than 5 million dollars in grant support in 2006. We continue to be ranked among the top in NIH funding for pharmacology/toxicology departments.  In fact, 92% of our faculty are listed as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on NIH grants.

Funds for research and training are largely from external grants from federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

NIH Heart Lung and Blood Institute
          NIH NIEHS/EPA Superfund
          National Science Foundation

Other funding sources include:
          American Heart Association
          Johns Hopkins University
          Dow Chemical
          Pfizer
          RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company

The continuous influx of support from research and training grants has allowed the department to maintain and increase instrumentation and core facilities so that graduate students are able to pursue almost any aspect of modern pharmacology and toxicology research.

MSU is committed to building its scholarly infrastructure of research, teaching and application of new knowledge. Grants go to areas linked to the Foundation’s mission, including intellectual property and planned giving. In 2006, the Foundation awarded $14 million to the University, its faculty, and researchers.
