8/05/08: Pat Shaw successfully defends dissertation
Pat Shaw's defense was hosted by Robert Roth, PhD on the topic of "Inflammation and idiosyncratic drug reactions: Inflammatory mechanisms and interactions in a murine model of trovafloxacin hepatotoxicity."
7/16/08: Li successfully defends dissertation
Wei "Melissa" Li successfully defended her dissertation on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. Melissa's dissertation is entitled "Blood Pressue, Venomotor Tone, Neurohumoral Activity, and Oxidative Stress." The defense was hosted by Dr. Greg Fink. Congratulations to Melissa!

7/3/08: Drs. Thornburg and Goudreau take on new titles
Dr. Thornburg is Vice-Chair and Chair-elect of the Board of Directors of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). Dr. Goudreau is Coordinator of the Level 1 COMLEX, the exam typically taken at the end of Year 2 of osteopathic medical school.
7/1/08: Pappas wins award at Neuroscience meeting
Sam Pappas, a physiology Ph.D. student working in Dr. Keith Lookingland's laboratory won the Montford F. Piercy Award at the Michigan Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. The meeting was held May 31, 2008 on the campus of Wayne State University.
Pappas gave an oral presentation entitled "Androgen-Dependent Sex Differences in the A11 Diencephalospinal Dopamine System" at the annual meeting. Congratulations, Sam!
6/18/08: Boerman presents proposal seminar
Erika Boerman, Graduate Student, presented her thesis proposal seminar, “Regulation of Calcium-Activated Potassium Channels in Skeletal Muscle Arterioles" on June 18, 2008. Boerman is pictured in the Pharm/Tox Library after successfully presenting her seminar.

5/5/08: "Haywood takes on regulatory affairs"
Dr. JR Haywood was interviewed for the Spring 2008 issue of Research News, published by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at MSU.
4/24/08: Demel successfully defends dissertation

Stacie Demel joined the DO/PhD program at Michigan State University in May of 2003. After completing two years of medical school, and graduate school courses she spent two full years in the lab of Dr. James Galligan studying neural regulation of mesenteric blood vessels and alterations in sympathetic nerves in a salt-sensitive model of hypertension. Her dissertation seminar on April 24th was titled “Impaired Purinergic Neurotransmission in Salt-Sensitive Hypertension.” She passed the defense and will receive the degree of PhD in Neuroscience. Demel is in the DO/PhD combined program at Michigan State University, and plans to go to Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills to finish her last two years of medical school. She hopes to graduate from medical school in 2010.
4/24/08: Hlavacova successfully defends dissertation
Alexandra Hlavacova successfully defended her dissertation on April 23, 2008. Her dissertation is entitled "Enhanced Adrenergic Sensitivity of Mesenteric Veins Compared to Arteries and Its Relation to Calcium Utilization and Handling." The defense was hosted by Dr. James Galligan. Congratulations, Alexandra!

3/17/08: Haitian Lu receives two awards from Society of Toxicology
Haitian Lu, a second-year doctoral student working with Dr. Norb Kaminski, has been awarded two honors from the Society of Toxicology for 2008. He is the recipient of the Colgate-Palmolive Award for "Student Research Training in Alternative Methods" and he is also the recipient of a "Best Presentation by a Student" award, Immunotoxicology Specialty Section.
1/16/08: Pharm/Tox to host recruitment weekend Feb. 14-17
The MSU Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology is hosting its annual recruitment weekend Feb. 14-17, 2008 on the campus of Michigan State University. Qualified selected student applicants have been invited to visit the campus, meet faculty, and tour the Department’s facilities. Selected prospective students are also invited to attend faculty presentations and social events.
The Department’s mission is to prepare the next generation of biomedical scientists with the technical, professional, and personal skills to become leaders. The annual recruitment weekend allows potential students a glimpse of daily life at the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, as well as the opportunity to meet current students and experience our dynamic campus community.
1/4/08: Schneider successfully defends dissertation
Dina Schneider successfully defended her dissertation on Jan. 4, 2008. Her dissertation is entitled "The Role of Pax5, Blimp-1 and AP-1 in the Suppression of B Cell Differentiation by TCDD." The defense was hosted by Dr. Norbert Kaminski. Congratulations, Dina!

11/1/07: MSU and Pharmacology Center featured in ad
Michigan State University and the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology were featured in advertisements in the Michigan Highlight section of Nature Magazine. The issue was published Nov. 1, 2007. The Integrative Pharmacology Online Masters Program and the In Vivo Pharmacology Center were both featured in the ads.

8/30/07: Dr. Goudreau featured in MSU Alumni Magazine
Dr. John Gourdreau was featured in the article "MSU's Inter-discipinlary focus helps land more NIH Research Funds" published in the Summer 2007 issue of MSU Alumni Magazine. Dr. Goudreau explained his research on the effectiveness of creatine in slowing the progression of Parkinson's disease.
8/23/07: Welcome New Students!

8/7/07: Atchison receives NIH Grant
Dr. Bill Atchison was recently awarded $183,276 from the National Institutes of Health for his project entitled “Potential Contribution of Environmental Metals to ALS.” Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, degenerative and fatal neurological disorder which involves decreased skeletal muscle function as a result of loss of upper and/or lower motor neurons. Clinical signs of ALS include skeletal muscle weakness, muscle cramping and fatiguing, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing. ALS typically presents later in life.
8/7/07: Roth awarded NIEHS Grant
Dr. Robert Roth was recently awarded $306,787 from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences for his project entitled “Multidisciplinary Training in Environmental Toxicology.”
7/27/07: New Nursing Facility Planned for Life Sciences Building
A donation from Alton and Janice Granger of Lansing will help the MSU College of Nursing build a new facility in the Life Sciences Building. The expansion will feature classrooms, research space, conference rooms, and an atrium gathering space.
5/18/07: MSU Medical School Expansions
The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology is gearing up to support the addition of College of Human Medicine Secchia Center and College of Osteopathic Medicine's expansion to southeast Michigan and planned growth in student class size.
