Pharm/Tox hosts IOSP Short Course

The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University is hosting 12 visiting students for the Integrative and Organ Systems Pharmacology (IOSP) Short Course Aug. 6-17, 2007.

The visiting students will live on campus in Owen Hall for two weeks while attending this intensive laboratory experience. Instructors from nine different institutions across the country, including Michigan State University, have been invited to lecture and lead laboratory exercises. Students attend lectures on the fundamentals of pharmacology, good laboratory practice, drug administration, drug development and safety pharmacology.

"We are pleased to have such a talented group of young scientists attend this year's short course. As one of only four pharmacology short courses offered in the country, we are in a unique position to contribute to the education of the next generation of researchers to plan and conduct in vivo experiments," said Dr. Joseph R. Haywood, Chairperson of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Each student will perform eight different laboratory exercises using state-of-the-art equipment to learn surgical implantation techniques, whole animal system monitoring and data collection procedures.
