University Resources

In addition to Department facilities, researchers have access to a full range of support services housed nearby on the Michigan State University campus. To gain a sense of the vast resources available, explore a list of MSU's most significant Facilities and Services links.


Equipment Support. MSU offers electronic, glassblowing and machine shops, as well as an electronics instrument designer/maker separate from the electronics shop, all for meeting researchers specialized or emerging equipment needs.

Other Instrumentation at MSU are available in nearby departments for reasonable rental fees.

NIH Regional Facility for Mass Spectrometry, housed in Biochemistry and includes two FABS Mass Spectrometers

The Center for Advanced Microscopy provides teachng and service work in the fields of:

  • scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-JEOL 35C with EDAX attachment in the Center for Electron Optics
  • transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-JEOL CX with EDAX attachment
  • scanning probe microscopy (SPM), and
  • laser scanning confocal microscopy (CLSM)

Crystallography Service offers the following equipment managed by the Chemistry Department:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffractometer systems (3 very different types)
  • Spencer 24x petrographic microscope and Leica GZ-6 15x-80x stereo zoom microscope, Arizona HydroGen Water-Welder model -V- hydrogen-oxygen torch and Supper model 801 Ball Drille

Research Support Services. Michigan State University has a tradition of successfully supporting science research endeavors. an established Intellectual Property office, University Laboratory AnimalResources (ULAR) and IRB/Human-Subject unit.

Academic Computing. MSU is committed to increasing its education programs to meet the evolving needs of today's student. Online learning, including multimedia development is primarily supported by Virtual University Design & Technology at Wills House. Other campus units involved in providing support include Academic Computing & Network Services (ACNS)
