NIGMS Integrative and Organ Systems Pharmacology
Short Course
The next Michigan State University Short Course in Integrative and Organ System Pharmacology will be 12-24 July, 2009, in East Lansing Michigan. The course will be an intensive laboratory experience for 12-14 students with extensive interactions with faculty.
Teaching faculty have been selected from Michigan State University, University of Michigan, University of Iowa, Southern Illinois University, Wayne State University, and The University of Texas, and from the Southwest Foundation for Medical Research, and Data Sciences International.
Ten different laboratory exercises are planned with each student performing all of the preparations and the experimental interventions. The exercises will include laboratory exercises to study: pharmacokinetcs, autonomic control of heart rate and blood pressure, renal function, locomotor activity, behavior in anxiety and depression, gastrointestinal motility vascular smooth muscle reactivity, and a computer modeling laboratory. In addition, there will be laboratory demonstrations that will include assessment of respiratory function, cardiac function, exercise training, and implantation and use of telemetric devices. Animal models of disease will be discussed for the cardiovascular, renal, neuromuscular, respiratory, central nervous, and gastrointestinal systems as well as models for oncology, behavioral, toxicological and infectious disease research. Finally, general lectures concerning fundamentals of pharmacology, good laboratory practice (GLP), drug administration and biological sampling, in vivo gene transfer technology, drug development, and safety pharmacology will be given.
Cost:
$500.00 payable immediately upon acceptance into the program. This charge is not refundable after 1 June 2009. Students are responsible for their travel and evening meals.
Prospective Audience:
It’s expected that most of the 12-14 students attending the 2009 Short Course will be graduate students. However, we encourage postdoctoral trainees, research technicians and faculty to consider attending. Individuals from Pharmacology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Cell Physiology may apply.
Housing:
Short course students will be housed in McDonnel Hall, a graduate student residence in the center of MSU’s campus: there is no cost to students for this accommodation. Students may arrange to stay elsewhere during the course at their own cost: there are several hotels with reasonable rates just off campus.
Application:
Students should submit a letter of application to include information on career history and goals, the objective of the prospective student in taking the course, a completed application form and a letter of recommendation (preferably from a work supervisor or research advisor). The deadline for applications has been extended to June 30, 2009. Download a flyer here.
