Admissions Procedure
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with at least 3 credits in chemistry and 3 credits in a biological science. The GRE is not required and applications may be completed online.
A letter of intent and two letters of recommendation are required for consideration for admission. Preference will be given to applicants with undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry, physiology or related sciences and who are currently employed in an academic, government or industrial laboratory.
International Students
The majority of the Integrative Pharmacology courses are delivered online and thus out-of-state and international students are not charged additional fees.
You will be required to pass the TOEFL exam. Other requirements are waived. You do NOT need the Statement of Financial Proof and Affidavit of Support form. You do NOT need to obtain special insurance. You do NOT need a VISA travel permit to be accepted into the program, but you will need one to attend the on-campus PHM 832 Lab course.
Personal Statement
The personal statement is an important component of the application, but you should try to limit your narrative to two pages. Outline your research interests and how the Integrative Pharmacology Program at MSU will help you to achieve your long term career goals. Describe how you might contribute to a diverse community here at MSU and any obstacles that you have overcome in gaining your present level of education. Also describe in detail any prior research and/or laboratory experience. Include specific topics you want to learn more about. Contact faculty at any stage in the admissions process to identify whether your background prepares you for a particular course or even before you have submitted an application. The personal statement is not just a writing sample, but make sure you write well:
- Tell the Admissions Committee the story behind the application form
- Show that you understand the field you want to enter
- Show that you can think reflectively and sympathetically
- Show that the degree will build on previous experiences
- Explain any black marks on your record
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Writing:
- What is unique about my background? Have I faced any unusual hardships? Which of these details have influenced my growth?
- When did I become interested in this field? What specific experiences (including work experiences) have furthered this interest?
- What are my career goals and why?
- Which personal characteristics, skills, etc. will enhance my prospects for success in graduate school and in the professional world?
- What strengths do I bring to succeed in online learning?
- What makes me stand out from the pack? What are the most compelling reasons for this school to be interested in me?
Begin Taking Courses Now
Are you a bit nervous about applying to the full program, but still want to take a few classes? Prospective students who have not been formally accepted into the Program or who do not immediately meet the program requirements may begin by taking courses as Lifelong Education Students.
